Overdraft Coverage Options

Because life doesn’t always go as planned

We know things happen — a bill hits early, a deposit is delayed, or life is just… life. When that causes an overdraft, we offer different ways to help cover it and reduce the stress.

At Kaskaskia Valley Community Credit Union (The Valley), you can choose from:

Overdraft Protection – Link to Another Account

You can link another KVCCU deposit account to your checking.
When your checking balance is short, we’ll automatically transfer money from the linked account to cover the difference.

Good for: Members who keep money in savings and want a simple backup

What it is: Automatic transfer from another KVCCU account

Cost: $3 per transfer¹

Overdraft Protection – Line of Credit¹ ²

You can also apply for an overdraft line of credit.
If your checking account goes negative, available funds from your line of credit can be used to cover the transaction.

  • What it is: A credit line tied to your checking
  • Cost: Subject to fees and interest
  • Good for: Members who want flexibility and are comfortable using credit

(All lines of credit are subject to credit approval.)

Overdraft Privilege

Overdraft Privilege is our discretionary program that allows us to pay certain transactions even when your available balance isn’t enough — up to a set limit — instead of automatically returning or declining them.

  • What it is: We may pay the item for you, up to your Overdraft Privilege limit
  • Cost: $30 Overdraft Fee per item when we pay an overdraft
  • How it works with other protection:
    • If you have Overdraft Protection set up (linked account or line of credit), that is used first
    • Overdraft Privilege can act as backup coverage if those options are exhausted
Standard vs. Extended Overdraft Privilege

We offer two levels of coverage:

Standard Coverage

You get this automatically on eligible checking accounts.

It may cover:

  • Checks
  • ACH / automatic debits
  • Recurring debit card transactions
  • Online bill payments
  • Internet banking transfers
  • Telephone banking
  • Teller window transactions

Extended Coverage* (Opt-In Required for Consumer Accounts)

If you choose Extended Coverage, we may also authorize and pay:

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday (non-recurring) debit card purchases

*Business accounts automatically receive Extended Coverage.

To add Extended Coverage, you can:

You can remove Overdraft Privilege at any time by contacting us.

Overdraft Privilege is not a guarantee or a line of credit. It’s a service we may provide at our discretion, based on your account being in good standing. For full details, please review the “A Few Important Thinks to Know” section in the disclosure.

A Few Important Things to Know

A link to another account or line of credit may be a less expensive option than Overdraft Privilege.

Each overdraft we pay may result in a $30 Overdraft Fee; items we return unpaid may also result in a $30 Returned Item Fee.

Multiple overdrafts in one day can result in multiple fees, since each item is assessed separately.

How and when your transactions are posted can affect whether an overdraft occurs and how many fees are charged.

Overdraft Privilege is discretionary; we may decline to pay an item, in which case it will be returned or declined.

New consumer checking accounts start with a $100 introductory Overdraft Privilege limit, which may increase to $500 after 30 days in good standing.

You are responsible for bringing your account back to a positive balance, and for any fees or amounts owed.

For the full details, including posting order, available balance, holds, and fee scenarios, please refer to the complete Overdraft Coverage disclosure on this page.
